ABOUT NAINITAL

Nainital sits at about 2,084 metres in the Kumaon hills, built almost entirely around Naini Lake — the reason people started calling this stretch of Uttarakhand the “Lake District of India.” It was a summer retreat for the British in the 1800s, and that history still shows up in the church spires, the cottages on the hillsides, and the old-school Mall Road that runs along the water.

Most first-time visitors base themselves right in town and use it as a hub — Naini Lake and Mall Road for the evening, Naina Devi Temple for a quick visit, Snow View Point or Tiffin Top for the view, and a day trip out to the quieter lakes at Bhimtal, Sattal, or Naukuchiatal if they have more than two days. If you enjoy walking, the trek up to Naina Peak (also called Cheena Peak) is doable in a few hours and gives you a proper Himalayan panorama without needing technical trekking gear.

Weather-wise, Nainital works almost year-round, but each season feels different. Summer (April–June) is the busiest stretch — cool compared to the plains, which is exactly why it gets crowded. Winter (December–February) is quieter and colder, with a real chance of snowfall in January. Monsoon (July–September) turns everything green but also brings landslide risk on the hill roads, so it’s the season locals will tell you to plan around rather than plan for.

Getting here: the nearest railway station is Kathgodam, about 35 km away, well connected to Delhi, Lucknow, and Dehradun by train — from Kathgodam it’s roughly an hour by shared jeep or taxi uphill. By road, it’s about 300 km / 7–8 hours from Delhi. Pantnagar is the nearest airport if you’re flying in.
