Delhi to Mussoorie Distance: Road, Train, Bus and Flight Guide (2026)
The distance from Delhi to Mussoorie is about 250 km by road via the new Delhi–Dehradun Expressway. Before April 2026 it was closer to 285–295 km through Meerut, Muzaffarnagar and Roorkee. In a straight line it is around 220 km, but there is no direct route through the hills.
The drive now takes roughly 4 to 5 hours, down from 6.5 to 9 hours on the old road. If you last did this trip a few years ago, plan it again from scratch.

By road: the new expressway route
The Delhi–Dehradun Expressway is a 6-lane, access-controlled road that starts at Akshardham in Delhi. It runs through Baghpat, Shamli and Saharanpur before reaching Dehradun. Its speed limit is 100 km/h, and a 12 km elevated stretch over the Rajaji National Park area has a lower limit. Watch for signs there, because animals do cross at night.
Your route in short:
- Delhi (Akshardham) to Dehradun on the expressway, about 210 km and 2.5 hours without traffic
- Dehradun to Mussoorie on the hill road, about 34–35 km and 1 to 1.25 hours
Add your own time. The 2.5 hours starts at Akshardham, not your home. From Noida, Gurgaon or Dwarka, allow extra time to reach the entry point. On Friday evenings and Sunday returns, add another 30 to 60 minutes.
Toll: About ₹675 one way for a car, and about ₹1,010 for a return within 24 hours. All toll plazas take only FASTag or UPI, and a vehicle without a valid FASTag pays double. Keep your FASTag topped up before you leave.
The old route through Meerut and Muzaffarnagar is still open, and its tolls are lower (about ₹215 for a car). But it takes hours longer, so most people now choose the expressway.
Mussoorie entry: The 35 km hill road from Dehradun has no toll. Cars entering Mussoorie pay a municipal eco-tax at the Kolhukhet barrier, reported at about ₹100–200. The town is moving this to FASTag, so carry both. Parking near Mall Road is limited, so use the designated parking areas and plan to walk the last stretch.
[Add your own note here: the last time you drove this, what time you left, where you stopped, and how long it actually took.]
By train: Delhi to Dehradun, then a taxi
No train goes to Mussoorie itself. The Mussoorie Express also ends at Dehradun, despite its name. From Dehradun station, a taxi or bus takes 1 to 1.25 hours.
| Train | Route | Journey time |
|---|---|---|
| Vande Bharat (22457) | Anand Vihar to Dehradun | 4h 45m |
| Jan Shatabdi (12055) | New Delhi to Dehradun | ~5h 50m |
| Shatabdi (12017) | New Delhi to Dehradun | ~6h 10m |
| Mussoorie Express (14041) | Old Delhi to Dehradun | ~10h 40m |
Total door-to-door time is around 6 to 7.5 hours once you add the taxi. The Vande Bharat is the quickest train, but check its current timing on IRCTC, because a late-evening arrival means a night drive uphill. Chair car fares on the Vande Bharat have started around ₹1,000 or more, so check current prices.
By bus
Direct buses run from Delhi (ISBT Kashmere Gate and Anand Vihar) to Mussoorie. They usually take 6.5 to 9 hours, depending on the operator, the traffic and how much of the expressway the bus uses. Fares range from a few hundred rupees for ordinary buses to more for Volvo and sleeper services, so check with the operator. Buses are the cheapest option but the slowest, and the hill road can be bumpy for people prone to motion sickness.
By air
Fly from Delhi to Jolly Grant Airport (DED) in Dehradun, which takes about an hour. From there Mussoorie is about 60 km, or 1.5 to 2 hours by prepaid taxi. Total time is around 4 hours, but with airport check-in and the taxi, flying rarely beats the expressway drive unless fares are low.
Which option is best?
- Fastest and most flexible: Self-drive or private cab on the expressway, 4 to 5 hours
- Best for solo travellers: Vande Bharat plus a Dehradun taxi, about 6 hours
- Cheapest: Bus
- Most relaxing for a family: A private cab, so you avoid parking and hill driving
Cab prices change with season and vehicle, so get two or three quotes. Some operators quote toll-inclusive fares and some don’t, so ask before you book.
Best time to travel
- March to June: Clear roads, but heavy traffic on Fridays and Sundays. Leave early in the morning.
- July to August (monsoon): Landslides and thick mist on the hill stretch, so drive carefully and check road updates.
- December to February: Dense fog on the plains section, and cold weather up in the hills.

Practical tips
- Start early. It saves hours on weekends.
- Check your FASTag balance before leaving Delhi.
- Fuel up before the hill section.
- Avoid driving the hill road at night if you don’t know it.
- Confirm Mall Road vehicle timings locally, because these rules change.
